There are many organised activities and clubs for children and young people, but as a parent you will want to know that any activity your child is involved with is safe.
It is always a good idea to visit the activity/group before your child or young person starts attending. Ask questions and talk with the staff and other parents who use the service. Most community groups should be happy to reassure parents that they are doing everything to keep their children safe.
What should you look for?
- Are staff and volunteers safely recruited with interviews, references and criminal record checks (CRB)?
- Are there enough staff to safely supervise the number of children attending?
- Are staff and volunteers trained in First Aid?
- Is the building and equipment safe for the age of your child?
- Do the staff communicate well with children and parents?
- Does the organisation have a child protection policy?
- Does the organisation have a health and safety policy?
- Is the organisation registered with Ofsted or other accredited quality assurance bodies?
- Are parents encouraged to observe and be involved in the group or activities?
- Is there information displayed about how you or your child can voice concerns?
It is important that both you and your child are happy about the group or activity that is chosen. Listen carefully to what your child has to say and listen to your own instincts. Remember the final decision always lies with you as a parent.
Lambeth Council monitors that Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks are completed in organisations we fund but is unable to register or approve the quality of the full range of private, independent and voluntary organisations that offer holiday activities for children and young people. Parents should always undertake appropriate checks regarding the care and safety of your child.
