Lambeth’s young representatives have launched their campaigns for 2010!

Lambeth’s Youth Mayor, Darren Tenkorang, and his Deputy Sara Zouhir, and the borough’s Members of Youth Parliament, Stephanie Harb and Daniel Longe have decided to spend their year in office campaigning on 4 key issues:

  • Encouraging more young people to get involved in volunteering, and creating more opportunities for them to do so

  • Protecting young people from the upcoming spending cuts, with a particular focus on Education Maintenance Allowance and the young peoples’ Oyster cards

  • Making it easier for young people to cycle to and from school or college in the borough

  • Developing the relationship between young people in Lambeth and the Police, in order to cut crime and help keep young people in the borough safe

The team will be meeting with decision-makers and leading figures from all over the borough over the next few months, to try and persuade them to back their campaigns for change.

They have also developed a survey for young people to complete, and a campaign Facebook group to enable young people to keep up-to-date on their progress. Click the links to let us know what you think of these important issues!

Lambeth's Youth Mayor project was set up in September 2007 to give young people in Lambeth a way of making their voices heard, and influencing the decisions that are made on their behalf by local Councillors, businesses and service-providers.

Lambeth’s current Youth Mayor is Darren Tenkorang, a 15 year old student of Bishop Thomas Grant School in Streatham.  His Deputy is Sara Zouhir, a 15 year old student at Lambeth Academy in Clapham.

Working alongside the Youth Mayor and Deputy, Lambeth also has 2 members of the UK Youth Parliament:  16 year old Stephanie Harb, and 14 year old Daniel Longe.

The UK Youth Parliament was set up in 1999 and has over 500 members from all corners of the UK and Northern Ireland.
