Lambeth’s Member of the Youth Parliament has been nominated for a prestigious campaign award for his work to get TfL fares reduced for young people aged 16-18.

Andrew Short, Lambeth’s representative in the UK Youth Parliament since February, has been working with other MYPs to get train and tube fares for 16-18 year olds brought into line with prices offered to those aged 11-15.

Andrew said: “I am very excited at the prospect of being involved in the competition. At the moment if you are aged 16-18 and still in school or college, it is costing you a significant amount of money to receive what should be a ‘free’ education. We believe this should be changed so that less well-off young people are not put off of further education.”

The Sheila McKechnie Foundation Shout Out! Awards are dedicated to young people working to make a positive change within their communities. More information about the Foundation is available at www.smk.org.uk
